Sailboat retrospective template
The team is a boat heading for an island, its goal. Wind pushes it along, anchors slow it down and rocks are the risks ahead. Naming the goal first gives every other topic something to be measured against.

When to use it
- Teams working towards a clear goal or launch
- Spotting risks before they turn into problems
- Retros where the team keeps losing sight of the bigger picture
The columns
🏝️ Island (Goal)
Where are we trying to get to?
For example
- Launch the mobile app by March
- Halve the time to onboard a customer
🪨 Rocks (Risks)
What risks lie ahead?
For example
- The app store review could take weeks
- Two people leave in January
⚓ Anchors (Slows us)
What is slowing us down?
For example
- Manual QA on every release
- Unclear requirements from sales
💨 Wind (Helps us)
What is helping us along?
For example
- Strong design support
- A product manager who says no
Facilitator tip
Agree on the island before anyone writes anything else. If the goal is fuzzy, the rest will be too.
